LANSING, MI, June 29th, 2017 – Michigan Chemistry Council Executive Director John Dulmes today responded to the release of a report examining potential alternatives to the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline:

“We welcome today’s release of the alternatives analysis report. It is an important step toward understanding the tradeoffs of options for delivering the energy that Michigan needs. We recognize there are questions about Line 5, but we also know that pipelines are the safest and most efficient means of moving the resources we rely on.”

“There are also real environmental and economic costs to any alternatives, especially rail or truck transport. In particular, increased use of rail or truck transport of energy products would greatly burden Michigan’s already-strained infrastructure, and multiply costs to other shippers.”

“Every day, our industry transports products that are essential to Michigan's manufacturing sector, agricultural production, safe drinking water, and many other uses. The Michigan Chemistry Council and our members will carefully scrutinize any impacts on these important goods as potential alternatives are debated.”

The Michigan Chemistry Council, established in 1967, represents Michigan’s chemical manufacturers, formulators and distributors. Chemistry is Michigan’s fifth-largest manufacturing sector, supporting more than 80,000 Michigan jobs and generating $147 million in state and local taxes.
